Allentown is Pennsylvanvia's third largest city. The Allentown area hosts a number of corporate headquarters including Mack Trucks, Inc. Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., Lehigh Portland Cement, LSI Corporation and PP&L. Allentown is a diverse city covering a wide variety of cultural and educational facilities, including colleges, theatre companies, symphony orchestras, an Opera Company, along with 2,000 acres of park land. In 1762, Allentown's founder, Chief Justice of Colonial PA's Supreme Court, William Allen originally called the city Northamptontown. Despite his efforts for the name Northamptontown, the city was called "Allen's Town". In 1838, the name of the city was officially changed to "Allentown". Allentown is in the midst of re-developing its downtown area to grow it's economy and making it more attractive to resident and visitors alike. Bethlehem, known as "Christmas City, USA" was founded in 1741 by members of the Moravian Church. The Star of Bethlehem overlooks the city from atop South Mountain; it is lit year round by 246 light bulbs and measures 81 ft. tall. Bethlehem is now known for many festivals including Musikfest, Celtic Classic and Christkindlmarkt to mention a few. The infamous marshmallow Peeps® and Mike & Ike® candies are made in Bethlehem by Just Born. The downtown area features many eclectic restaurants, shops and art galleries that will make your visit to the area memorable. Easton is one of the three primary cities that make up the Lehigh Valley. It was founded in 1752 by Thomas Penn (the son of William Penn). Easton is known as one of the only three places known to have had a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. On July 8, 1776 this famous document was read from the steps of the Courthouse by Robert Levers. Among the special attractions Easton has to offer are the Crayola Factory, the National Canal Museum, the Anatomy Academ, The State Theatre for the Performing Arts and the mule-drawn Canal Boat. Many shops and restaurants are beautifully located in Easton's historic business district and are within walking distance to historic sites, attractions and the arts. |
